Talisman

‘Curious Work’ opens next week and I’ve continued to explore the artefacts and ornament of shrines in #glass Amulets, talismans and charms: small symbols imbued with the hopes, fears and prayers that arise in matters of fertility, birth and early child-rearing. In the 17th century when infant mortality was high, coral was widely used as a talisman from birth onwards, symbolising vigour and life force - it also had practical application as a teether for infants. Origin stories of coral repute it to be the petrified blood of Medusa or Christ, it was said to prevent the evil eye and be a prophylactic against witches. Medieval era (and later) coral branches can be found hung with a multiplicity of talismans and charms. In constructing this piece I’m exploring the visual resonance with (and symbolism of) the archetype of the Tree of Life.
